Exploring ‘The Nature Island’ - Hiking in Dominica
|
|

|
If
you think Caribbean holidays are all about sun, sea, sand and cocktails, then
think again. For travellers to the island of Dominica, the attractions lay
mainly in the interior, exploring its stunning natural features.
Dominica’s rugged landscape makes it a haven for hikers, with trails of
varying levels through volcanic valleys, lush rainforests, past cascading
waterfalls and even a Boiling Lake. With very little flat land and so much
pristine rainforest, the best way to explore Dominica is on foot.
A new long-distance walking trail is currently under development which will
traverse the entire length of Dominica and highlight to walkers exactly why
Dominica is known as ‘The Nature Island’. Known as The Waitukubuli Trail, after
the Carib Indian name for the island meaning ‘tall is her body’, the trail will
stretch 115 miles and take around two weeks to complete. The Waitukubuli
Trail is set for completion in the next year, but many sections can already be
enjoyed.
